MEET ALEX G
Alex G is a 22 year old Philadelphian who has set Bandcamp’s air waves on fire with a strew of DIY bedroom guitar pop releases over the last few years. His impressive back catalogue and die hard following earned him a deal with Domino Records with whom he releases Beach Music on October 9. We chat to him about signing with an established indie label, production and pets.
You recently signed to Domino to release your new LP Beach Music, but from what I gather this was written and recorded in your apartment as opposed in their studio with a full band and producer. Did you purposefully avoid this route?
I wrote and recorded it in the way that was most familiar to me. I do this because I am confident I can make a decent product without a producer. I produce myself.
Did the production of this album differ at all from previous records?
The only difference was the mixing. Usually I mix myself. This album was mixed by Jacob Portrait in his studio.
Do you find it important to be responsible for every aspect of the recording process yourself?
Yes. I usually have a strong idea of the song before it is recorded. It is easier if I just do everything myself rather than communicate every little aspect of my conception to someone else.
You’re probably sick of hearing this, but I really dug all your Bandcamp releases. Are you trying to distance yourself from these older records in favour of a more mature or better produced sound? Or are you still proud of them?
Thanks. I’m glad you like them. I’m not trying to distance myself from anything. I don’t really think about my old recordings when making new music. I just focus on making music that resonates with me in the moment… that’s all I’ve ever done. I guess I’m proud of them. I know I’m not ashamed of them, ha.
You are 22 years old with 7 albums under your belt. Will this volition continue now you have a record deal?
I still write about as much as I always have. I don’t think I’ll be releasing music as frequently. I’d like to be a little more careful with what I decide to put out.
What bands coming out of Philly are you into right now?
Cold Foamers, Brandon Can’t Dance, Shelf Life… There’s a lot but I can’t think of any more at the moment.
You’re frequently compared to Elliot Smith. Is he an influence on your music at all? Who / what are you influenced by?
Sure. I used to listen to Elliott Smith a lot when I was younger. I listened to him so much that I avoid listening to his music now. I also liked Modest Mouse, Wilco, The Knife, Aphex Twin, Radiohead. I don’t listen to much music anymore. There’s a band called True Widow from Texas that I really like.
Your songs reference pets a lot. Have you ever considered bringing an animal in for guest vocals? It worked pretty well for Andrew WK and Lil Bub…
I’ve been asked this a lot – why do I write about pets so much. There’s only two songs of mine that I can think of that mention my mom’s dogs… is that a lot? But anyway, yeah. Sometimes I rub peanut butter on the microphone and let the dog lick it off. It makes for a good ambient texture in songs that could use something extra.
